What's in a name? - Cái tên chứa đựng những gì?
I visited the Vietnam University of Trade a few days ago. I was pleasantly surprised when a student who recognised me from the VTV Ring the Golden Bell show greeted me by saying “hello Mr Khalid Muhmood”. People normally refer to me as Mr Apollo or “the guy who works at Apollo” but rarely use my name which is a difficult name to remember and even more difficult to say. My name Khalid means someone who will live long. I hope that’s true. It would be very easy for me to change my name to John, James or William but I’m proud of my name so have stuck with it. During filming for VTV I met with Kasim the pop star who also has a father with Arabic origins and has also kept his name. I know many Vietnamese who use a foreign name when they meet foreigners, for example Quang will ask me to call him Johnny.
I’m not sure why people do it. Vietnamese names are not that different to pronounce and foreigners living in Vietnam very rarely have a Vietnamese nickname. Is it a good idea for Vietnamese to have a foreign name to use with foreigners and if so then why? Contribute your opinion by leaving a comment below!

Recently I was at a conference in Hanoi organised by the Economist Group which attracted several foreign and Vietnamese VIPs including Prime Minister Dung. The conference was very well attended at the impressive newly built National Convention Centre. The only downside was that the head of security decided on day 1 that no taxis could drive through the gates of the convention centre so all the foreign guests who had flown in from overseas were made to walk 500m in the Hanoi morning mist. Luckily, this was fixed on the 2nd day.
As Vietnam’s economy grows lots of industries are becoming attractive to foreign and local investors. Banking and Property seem to be the most popular. Many companies who were previously focused on Taxi services, IT, Ship Building are now setting up banks and property subsidiaries. The big danger with this is that they lose focus on their key industry. It is possible for a company to be successfully active in many different industries but it is very difficult to get right and I feel some companies are underestimating how difficult it is.
For example, a taxi company recently set up training centres which in theory should compete with Apollo. In practice, I feel they will be as successful as Apollo would be if we moved into the taxi business. What do you feel about the trend of Vietnamese companies to diversify into these new hot sectors? What are the key factors that will determine whether the diversification is a success?
Mới đây, tôi tham dự một hội nghị được tổ chức bởi The Economist Group tại Hà Nội. Sự kiện này đã thu hút sự tham gia của nhiều nhân vật trọng yếu Việt Nam cũng như nước ngoài, trong đó có Thủ tướng Nguyễn Tấn Dũng. Những người tham dự có mặt rất đông đủ tại Trung tâm Hội nghị quốc gia vừa mới được xây dựng hết sức ấn tượng. Chỉ có một khuyết điểm nhỏ là vào ngày đầu tiên, vị Trưởng ban An ninh quyết định không cho taxi chạy qua cổng Trung tâm Hội nghị, thế nên tất cả các vị khách nước ngoài – những người đã bay về dự Hội nghị từ nước ngoài – phải đi bộ khoảng 500m trong sương mù Hà Nội. Rất may là điều này được thay đổi vào ngày thứ hai.
Nền kinh tế Việt Nam đang phát triển, do đó, nhiều ngành kinh doanh đang trở nên rất hấp dẫn đối với các nhà đầu tư trong cũng như ngoài nước. Lĩnh vực Ngân hàng và Bất động sản có vẻ sôi động hơn cả. Nhiều công ty trước đây chỉ tập trung vào kinh doanh Dịch vụ Taxi, Công nghệ Thông tin, Đóng tàu giờ đây cũng thành lập các công ty con kinh doanh ngành ngân hàng và bất động sản. Nguy hiểm lớn nhất đối với khuynh hướng này là họ sẽ mất tập trung vào lĩnh vực trọng yếu của mình. Một công ty dĩ nhiên có thể thành công trong nhiều lĩnh vực nhưng điều này thật sự không hề dễ dàng và tôi cảm thấy một số công ty đã không đánh giá đúng sự khó khăn này.
Chẳng hạn, một công ty taxi gần đây đã thành lập một trung tâm đào tạo, theo lý thuyết, trung tâm này sẽ trở thành đối thủ cạnh tranh của Apollo. Nhưng trên thực tế, tôi cảm thấy khả năng thành công của họ cũng giống như khả năng thành công của Apollo nếu chúng tôi chuyển sang đầu tư vào lĩnh vực kinh doanh taxi. Bạn nghĩ sao về khuynh hướng mở rộng sang các ngành đang nóng của các công ty Việt Nam? Đâu là yếu tố quyết định sự thành công của sự đa dạng hóa này?

I remember when we first opened Apollo, we opened more than ten years ago during the summer months. We built up our student numbers and general feedback showed we were doing a good job so I was quite alarmed when six months later our student numbers dropped dramatically. That's when I realised the impact of TET. As a foreigner living in Vietnam one of the first things I realised about TET was that it was not just a few days holiday. Some people would clock out for almost a month. Even if they were still at work it would be useless to try to get anything done. Even today, although the TET "switch off time" has become much shorter it's still a lot longer than New Year holidays in most other countries. It shows how special TET is. An aspect of TET I enjoyed was how Vietnamese friends all invite you to come and celebrate in their homes. AT TET, even people whom I have only met once or twice invite me to their homes to celebrate.
Tôi vẫn còn nhớ những ngày đầu khi Apollo mới đi vào hoạt động hơn mười năm trước đây vào những tháng mùa hè. Số lượng học viên ngày càng đông chứng tỏ chúng tôi đang làm tốt công việc của mình, vì thế tôi thực sự cảm thấy trong tình trạng báo động khi sáu tháng sau đó số lượng học viên giảm đi đáng kể. Rồi tôi nhận ra đó là do ảnh hưởng của Tết. Là người nước ngoài sinh sống ở Việt
Dù tôi không hảo món bánh chưng cho lắm, tôi hoàn toàn trân trọng tình cảm mà người Việt gửi gắm vào chiếc bánh khi họ gói bánh chưng tại nhà. Ngày nay mọi người thường mua bánh chưng ở cửa hiệu nhưng tôi chẳng thể nào quên lần được mời đến ăn Tết ở nhà Hoa - một trong những thành viên trụ cột của Apollo. Mẹ của Hoa kể cho chúng tôi nghe về cách bà gói và luộc bánh chưng; và tôi nhớ mình đã cảm động như thế nào trước sự nhẫn nại và lòng yêu thương bà đã gửi gắm vào quá trình làm bánh.
